Monday, May 31st, 2004best lan party ever
Monday, May 17th, 2004So a friend of mine from church, a guy I’ve known for basically all my life, is getting married. That’s starting to happen more and more. It’s a little disconcerting. I just don’t really feel all that old. And as wonderful as marriage is, I find that quite a bit of folks are getting married before they have a solid job or have finished school. Call me old-fashioned, but I don’t really see the merit in that. Making lots of babies is all fine and dandy, but … well … eeh … finish your other stuff first.
Moving on.
So this dude that’s getting married wanted to do something before he got tied down and comitted. So, he had a big ol’ lan party. We had it at what, IMHO, was the best bachelor pad, ever. This dude wired his house, secretly, while it was being built with network and A/V cabling. He has a HDTV LCD projector and a 7′ projector screen in his living room with a rockin’ sound system.
I got there at 6:00. And we started installing stuff. This was a RTS crowd and not my standard FPS. We tried playing some Cossacks but our server kept crashing, so we hit up some Starcraft for a while. I got royally beaten. Around 10:00 or 11:00 we started playing some Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. This game has a bit of a learning curve and I had only played it once or twice. I was the only one that had ever played. However, I’d seen Dan and Stephen playing it quite a bit, so I had some clue how to work it.
For the first match we just stumbled around killing each other. Eventually I began to figure things out and yell at folks what to do. About the 2nd or 3rd match we had it down pretty well.
We played all 6 maps both ways (30min per round). We finally called it quits around 4:30 Sunday morning.
It was amazing.
Lots of food and drink and pizza and games. Late night.
PLUS, I was actually good! I usually had the most experience points. By about 2 or 3 my team had 3 folks on it vs. 6 of the other guys. And, we still dominated!
It was definitely one of the best LAN parties I’d been too.
Death Rally
Wednesday, May 5th, 2004Go read this story.
What you can’t read (unless you get the magazine) is the side bar with pictures of the rally. Vicious. Crude. Explicit – “tarts for choice” or “keep Bush’s hands out of my pants”.
One protestor said:
“I just had to be here to fight for the next generation and the generation after that.”
What??! You’re fighting for the right to kill the next generation.
Or, as seen on a protest sign of an older woman: “Menapausal (sic) women nostalgic for choice”
Huh?! She’s nostalgic for the ability to get pregnant then kill the child!?
Another sign said “Abort Bush”
Weep for the dead – The dead with no voice.
